ALERT
Be aware of strangers in parking lots
Recently an older female was approached in a grocery store parking lot by two well dressed black females. Targeted due to age, the crooks had a plan to confuse and distract the elderly woman.
- The females had a box of money that they said they found and ask the victim for help returning the cash to the owner.
- After confusing the victim with double talk, they convinced the victim to drive them to a local drug store to seek help. During the drive one of the crooks took cash and credit cards from the victims’ wallet.
- When they arrived at the drug store one female went in for a minute and came back to tell the victim she needed to withdraw money from her bank account and the manager would hold the cash till the owner was located. The crooks told the victim if the owner was not located in 30 days she (the victim) would be entitled to half of the funds in the box.
- Best practice is to call the police and make a report when confronted by strangers presenting large amounts of cash and wanting to split it. This scam works most of the time on elderly victims due to the skills of the crooks and their ability to confuse and befriend the victim.
